Background

Culture

I’m a Brazilian-born Japanese who grew up in the United States. Yes, I do speak Portuguese. No, I don’t speak Japanese (yet).

Hobbies

Board games! In a society that is connected digitally, it’s refreshing to get together with friends and pull out a great board game for a couple hours. However, if I want to indulge in that digital world, I’ll hop online and play some Super Smash Bros.

Cooking

Cooking is an outlet for creativity for me. It’s interesting to learn how to cook foods from different cultures and see how different flavors are put together to create something delicious.

Media

Anime has been a big part of my life recently. I’m catching up on the last 10 years of popular shows and enjoying every minute of it. I also have a semi-low budget audio listening system (a small DAC+Amp and some decent Sennheiser cans) and enjoy a relaxing listening session from time to time.

Music

At the University of Michigan, I had the pleasure of studying saxophone with the renowned saxophone professor, Donald Sinta. The experience of being in such a supportive yet competitive saxophone studio was incredible. Day in and day out, everyone was dedicated to furthering their craft and growing themselves as musicians - my colleagues were and still are some of the hardest working individuals I know.

My background as a musician has helped me grow in many ways. The attention to detail that was required has carried over into my software engineering career. The hard-working attitude and drive for success has helped me push to grow more and more. I was also humbled by being surrounded by those who had immense talent and motivation as I was forced to earn their respect.

Software Engineering

My passion for software engineering started with problem solving. After my first programming course in college, I yearned for the next problem that I could solve through software. That drove me to do another degree, this time in engineering. I was fortunate enough to land internships at Orbitz and Microsoft and then went on to start my career as a full-time employee at Microsoft.

Over time, my passions have shifted from the technical problem solving aspects of software development to the people problem solving aspects of being a manager. I developed this passion through my experiences of mentoring junior engineers and managing college and industry interns.
